The good thing about seeing these two names at the beginning of a movie is that you’ll pretty know much of what to expect/gonna get. They, or these days, he is here to entertain, and where as there are a few discrepancies along the way (Bad Company, Pearl Neckl… I mean Pearl Harbor and Kangaroo frickin Jack to name but a few) if you are a fan of the movie world, you pretty know what to expect, and unless you begin to analyze things too closely, you’re not going to be disappointed.
The Rock took the action genre to a whole different level. With Oscar winners and other ‘serious’ thesps on board the action stood out, but there was still a backbone to it, that didn’t just rely on a few one-liners here and there to try and get through the picture. I don’t care what everyone else says, Pearl Harbor aside, Michael Bay delivers… what do you mean you want my resignation? From the trailers you may have seen before hand, you know what to expect and he supplies it to the audience in droves. If you go into a Bay film expecting Shakespeare, then you'll be mighty disappointed. But if you go into the theatre expecting a good time, then you’ll come out smiling. Which in turn really covers my choices 1, 2 and 4.
I remember when Armageddon was released, that it was pretty much laughed out of Cannes, but like I said you have to take these films for what they are, then and only then are you half way there.
Bad Boys is a perfect example of this fun, but still at a cost in that it has given Martin Lawrence some kind of career.
Con Air was another example of a film that despite the likes of Nic Cage and John Malkovich being involved did not purport to be anything more than it was, and became all the better for it. I could tell you a story of when Tyler Durden and I were invited to the premiere of this film, which is another reason it makes my top 5, but I think I will leave it up to him and if he doesn’t mention it, then we’ll save it for another day…
What can I say about my final choice? Other than, Will Smith, Gene Hackman, and Tony Scott all together… is there any way that, that could produce a bad film?
Runners up include ‘Crimson Tide’, a great film, but Fletch’ll know more and ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ may have made it, but was ultimately removed due to the b****** of a sequel that was ‘Beverly Hills Cop 3’
