Why did these films make it to our list this week? Apart from being mega cheap, Tyler will rave through each of them here and now...
PSYCHO - and it's the Hitchcock version, not the lousy Van Sant remake - is certainly one of Hitch's best films. The shower scene is known by most people, even if they haven't seen the original movie. Apart from genuine tension and shock, Hitchcock actually managed to make an incredibly dark film and slip it by the censors. Anthony Perkins could never escape the role, he was simply too good and no-one would accept him as anything else. The use of stillness and music has been emulated for the last 40 years, and Hitch even pulled a blinder by killing the star off half way through the movie - try doing that to Julia Roberts these days...
Hitchcock's films are varied in quality, but Psycho rates highly. What's amazing about this price, is that every Hitch film is still pretty expensive to buy considering their age. £5.99 is a fantastic price, and worth getting before they realise they're made a mistake on their website!
Is there anyone who doesn't know about 'The Dogs'. People might prefer Pulp Fiction, people might think they've seen it too many times to want it, but, at the end of the day, RESERVOIR DOGS was one of the most outrageous and outstanding debuts films in movie history. Tarantino has the keenest ear for dialogue, and the low budget kept his film lean and exciting. Don't be fooled by the lack of extras - there is a hidden Easter Egg on the disc that's worth it's weight to any Tarantino fan.
JERRY MAGUIRE made Jimmy TwoTimes cry. It made a lot of guys cry. Some people don't like it, but here at nitro-movies.com, we think it's a beautiful film. Wonderful soundtrack, top of his game Tom Cruise heads a cast that have never been better - Renee Zelwegger looks beautiful, Cuba Gooding is on fire, even Mrs John Travolta (Kelly Preston) plays it brilliantly. Cameron Crowe weaves a fantastic script and helms it with flair. Let's hope he finds his course again after the mildly disappointing Vanilla Sky.
What's great about this edition of the DVD, is it's the first time Cruise has ever done a commentary track for any film, and it's chock full of other goodies. Under a tenner? It had me at hello.
SEXY BEAST is one of the best British movies for - oh - such a long time, it pains me to think about it. At the time it looked like a ban 'un - another gangster movie, another Ray Winstone character from the East End, Ian McShane as one of the bad guys...oh dear...But how wrong we were. Ray was amazing - a subtle performance to the barnstorming (and Oscar nominated) Ben Kingsley, it was because Ray looked scared that we felt the fear. Kingsley found a whole new audience, and became someone we would never want to meet. Even the story isn't your normal gangster rubbish. All helmed by the Guniess horses in the sea director, Jonathan Glazer. The boy has a future, and this DVD belongs in your collection.
Hulk director Ang Lee went back to his native continent to direct this masterpiece. CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON was hailed by the Awards circuit, and made a bundle at the box office, it's a film you have to see, and when you do, you'll want to own it. Taking the art of wire work fighting to the extreme, you don't even realise the film is in Mandarin as the story washes into your subconscious, all the while the visuals grabbing your attention. So many stand out scenes, but my favourite is the bar brawl where the extraordinary Zhang Ziyi beats the living life out of a few dozen thick skulled men. Wonderful. £6.99?! A must own!
